Privacy Policy

AptBite is built on a simple promise: no account, no third-party advertising or tracking. Optional anonymous analytics can be enabled in the app. This policy explains exactly what the app stores, where, and why.

What we don't collect

• No name, email, phone number, or any account — the app has no sign-up at all.
• No precise location, contacts, photos, or device identifiers for advertising.
• No third-party advertising or tracking SDKs.

What stays on your device (and your iCloud)

• Your nutrition goal, comparison history, saved picks, favorite products, and prices you enter are stored locally and, if iCloud is enabled, sync privately via your iCloud account (CloudKit private database). We cannot read this data.
• You can delete everything anytime in the app: More → Privacy → Clear history. This removes scans, comparisons, favorites, prices and cached products on your device and iCloud, and resets the anonymous install identifier so past analytics events can no longer be associated. Deleting the app also removes all local data.

What our servers see

To look up products, the app sends the barcode number you scan to our backend, which fetches nutrition data from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central. These lookups are not linked to any identity — there is no user account to link them to. A random, per-install identifier (generated on first launch, resettable by reinstalling) is used only for A/B experiment assignment and rate limiting.

Analytics

If you opt in (More → Privacy → Share anonymous analytics), we collect minimal, allow-listed usage events — for example, that a comparison completed. Event payloads never include barcodes, product names, prices, or any free text. You can turn this off anytime.

Purchases

Subscriptions and lifetime purchases are processed entirely by the App Store (StoreKit). We never see your payment details. Your entitlement is verified on-device from App Store receipts.

Data sources

Nutrition data is provided by Open Food Facts (ODbL) and USDA FoodData Central. When you look up a product, these services may see the barcode request as part of normal API operation.

Children

AptBite does not knowingly collect any data from children under 13. The app collects no personal data from anyone.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update this page and note the date above. Material changes will also be announced in the app release notes.
